It is important to test Fire Doors Fire doors slow the spread of fire

If you have fire doors in your building you need to get them inspected and tested. Not only is it a requirement of Minnesota's Fire Marshall and the National Fire Protection Association, NFPA that fire doors be tested once per year-we think it is a good idea.

As part of our inspection program we regularly find doors that do not close properly. In fact in one case we found that half of the fire doors did not close properly-11 out of 22 doors did not close!

Fire doors must be checked yearly to maintain their proper operation.

Some common reasons doors fail inspection (for other reasons click here).

* If you have recently painted the area near a fire door the door may not operate according to code (correctly).

* If the doorway is used by carts, lift trucks, or forklifts the guide rails may be damaged or misaligned preventing proper closing of the fire door.

Misunderstanding about fire door testing

We have heard people who are under the mistaken impression that testing the fire alarm or suppression system is all that is needed. This is simply not true. One of the most important steps during our inspection is to make sure that the door closes as it was designed.

Another misconception is that fire doors testing is only required when they are first installed. This is not true. All relevant codes, including NFPA-80 and Minnesota's Fire Marshall require fire doors to be tested annually.
